The Border Security Index ranks states from most (#1) to least (#50) impacted by border insecurity at the U.S./Mexico border. State ranks were calculated based on 22 variables reflecting the following state-level impact metrics: crime, illegal immigration, drug dependency, drug-related mortality, and drug-related treatment. Combined scores for these categories were incorporated into the overall rank for each state.
